My Ponca grandfather said that during the time of the Oklahoma land runs; the Ponca Indian agent said the men could take up arms to fire warning shots if would-be homesteaders got too close to Ponca boundaries. The white horse rider was fashioned after a current OK. state map and the handprint represents the 5 land runs that subsequently took place, starting in 1889.
